BJP, India’s ruling party could be set for a massive organisational change with Amit Shah reportedly stepping down from the post after five phenomenally successful years at the helm. BJP’s gains under his stewardship would have already earned him a place in the annals of Indian history, much before the transformational role he began playing at the home ministry.

Winning Uttar Pradesh for BJP in 2014 catapulted Amit Shah, until then a relative junior in BJP’s pecking order, to the top post when Rajnath Singh stepped down. That he had Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s abiding trust also helped. Since then Shah’s strategies have been credited for BJP storming to power in UP, overthrowing Congress in state after state, turning the North-East into a BJP bastion, and by the time of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections making deep inroads into West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana.

In overseeing BJP’s electoral preparations, forming governments at the knife-edge, and travelling across India to meet workers and address public rallies, Shah ensured the BJP organisation stayed in fighting fit shape. His statements like Congress-mukt bharat, and BJP’s strategy of forming governments at any cost earned him critics. For the last several months, BJP has been preparing for the transition with JP Nadda assuming the role of working president. With BJP struggling to retain its incumbent state governments, Nadda has his task cut out.
